Byles stood on the deck with Catholics, Protestants, and Jews kneeling around him,\u201d Agnes McCoy, another Irish immigrant,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatherbyles.com\/nytelegram.htm\">told the New York Telegram<\/a>&nbsp;after the sinking, according to the website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatherbyles.com\/index.htm\">FatherByles.com<\/a>. \u201cFather Byles was saying the Rosary and praying for the repose of the souls of those about to perish. To many he administered the last rites of the Church.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen the crash came, we were thrown from our berths,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia-titanica.org\/titanic-survivor\/ellen-mary-mockler.html\">Ellen Mary Mockler<\/a>, an Irish immigrant in third class, said after the sinking. \u201cWe saw before us, coming down the passageway, with his hand uplifted, Father Byles\u2026. \u2018Be calm, my good people,\u2019 he said, and then he went about the steerage giving absolution and blessings.\u201d<\/strong><strong>\u201cFather Byles could have been saved, but he would not leave,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia-titanica.org\/heroic-priests-gave-up-lives-quiet-crowds.html\">Mockler said<\/a>. \u201cAfter I got in the boat, which was the last one to leave, and we were slowly going further away from the ship, I could hear distinctly the voice of the priest and the responses to his prayers.\u201d<\/strong><strong>+<\/strong><strong>Father Byles may have perished in the sinking, but like the theme song to the Titanic movie says, his heart goes on. Graham Smith, a priest who headed Father Byles\u2019 former parish of St. Helen\u2019s in Ongar, England, introduced the cause for beatification in 2015.
