[See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spiritdailyblog.com\/miracles\/a-miraculous-statue-in-sicily-continues-to-draw-pilgrims\">yesterday\u2019s story<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was upon waking \u2014 and finding herself wonderfully able to see \u2014 that Antonina Lannuso (and husband Angelo) noticed it weeping.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.learnsicilian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/12773_01-I_coniugi_Giusto-Iannuso_ritratti_con_la_Madonnina_dopo_l.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is now known as the Weeping Madonna of Syracuse (in Italian,&nbsp;<em>Madonna Delle Lacrime),<\/em>&nbsp;and a large church, with towering spire, was built to house it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have come to learn that four years before that event, incredibly, and far across the ocean, another image connected to the Madonna \u201cwept\u201d and was also in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/life-and-culture\/g66l-2019\/04\/f4df44853b7048\/1949-when-a-little-girls-miracle-became-a-holy-week-sensation-worldwide.html\">city named Syracuse<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;<em>this one in Upstate New York.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The occurrence: Tuesday, April 13, 1949, during Holy Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That day, the strongest earthquake in more than 130 years rattled the Pacific Northwest, killing eight. It was a mega-event, dominating news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"OABMJPJUYRETHN637N34FFTYFE\">But in Syracuse, New York,&nbsp;the city\u2019s attention was focused elsewhere \u2014 to be precise, on a house at 511 Hawley Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the&nbsp;<em>Post-Standard<\/em>&nbsp;reported: \u201cOn April 3, 1949, while cleaning her home, Viola Martin, a divorced mother of four, placed a 2-foot tall plaster statue of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, onto a windowsill. It fell outside and struck a rock, smashing into pieces. The statue left a small cross on the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"QHZGWVZZ2NGDPP6LOK4BAFE4VU\">\u201cSomehow, the head of the statue remained intact, suffering only a small scratch on its nose, and landed in the driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"IBJC3KEIQNCITFU5LIGRDFJDA4\">\u201cShirley Anne, 11, the oldest of the children, and described as \u2018very religious,\u2019 found the head while playing and gave the statue a kiss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe head, she said, began to weep tears. She went to tell her mother. When her mother saw the teardrops, she was shocked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/resizer\/5-tBDKoR8XeJ9jv2imT5P51x-4Q=\/1280x0\/smart\/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/expo.advance.net\/img\/35eb0f6887\/width2048\/755_kissingstatue.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Soon, throngs were crowding the home\u2019s front porch hoping to catch a glimpse of an 11-year-old girl and her weeping statue of Saint Anne and thousands more when the statue\u2019s head was brought to Our Lady of Pompeii Church, where tears were witnessed by twenty people, including three priests, altar boys, and nuns. The tears reappeared when they were wiped away, usually materializing after the devout girl kissed it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/resizer\/4v9ZrT54_CCd1FfGu7x2Vy0wHMs=\/1280x0\/smart\/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/expo.advance.net\/img\/54fddc5c4d\/width2048\/bf7_showshermother.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It even bears resemblance to the Sicilian image that would lacrymate four years hence&nbsp;<em>[below].<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.learnsicilian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/516_27-quadro-della-madonna-delle-lacrime-venerato-nel-santuario_1757602.jpg\" alt=\"madonna delle lacrime Siracusa\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A frenzy ensued, so many coming to see that police had to restore order. Said the newspaper: \u201cShirley Anne lightly touches her lips to the forehead, then holds the head away from her. In a moment, the dull plaster finish begins to glisten at the corner of one eye. The glistening spots spread, and touching them leave no doubt, that they are watery, tear-like liquid. If the tears are wiped away, they reappear when Shirley Anne again kisses the statue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herman Borzner, the paper\u2019s chief photographer \u2014 who called himself a \u201cpretty skeptical guy\u201d \u2014 said he \u201cwouldn\u2019t begin to explain it, but I saw water appear in the crevice between the eye and the nose on one side of the face.\u201d Ditto for a nearby college professor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/resizer\/nnjbVsAiOlNWAxVpIEdxgycPf2Q=\/1280x0\/smart\/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/expo.advance.net\/img\/3c431262a0\/width2048\/5d9_april14headlines.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>(copyright, Heritage Microfilm)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tears even appeared on live television \u2014 but stopped on Good Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No coincidence, that it was Holy Week. The mother of Mary, weeping along with her daughter, weeping for her grandSon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1949 was the year Israel formed as an independent nation, NATO was formed, and Russia tested its first atomic bomb. And perhaps it is no coincidence that the miracle was the same day as that quake. (<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;greatest quake ever to hit Alaska would occur fifteen years later \u2014 on Good Friday, 1964.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name \u201cSyracuse\u201d &nbsp;is from a pre-Hellenic word, perhaps Phoenician&nbsp;<em>serah<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cto feel ill,\u201d in reference to its location near a swamp.
