Babe Ruth<\/a> is considered the greatest baseball player<\/a> of all time. He was also known for his drinking, partying, womanizing, and for his appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he was also a baptized Catholic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babe Ruth Always Found His Way Back to the Catholic Faith<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In a letter written shortly before his death, Ruth explained his lifelong faith journey. And it was, quite literally, lifelong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that even if children do not understand or appreciate their upbringing in the Catholic faith, \u201conce religion sinks in, it stays there\u2013deep down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This proved true for him<\/strong>, as he attended Catholic school and maintained a good relationship with one of the school\u2019s religious brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cThe lads who get religious training, get it where it counts\u2013in the roots. They may fail it, but it never fails them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While chasing worldly pleasures, faith remained a part of his life, even if he went astray for a little while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile I drifted away from the Church, I did have my own \u2018altar,\u2019 a big window of my New York apartment overlooking the city lights. Often I would kneel before that window and say my prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ruth continued:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would feel quite humble then. I\u2019d ask God to help me not make such a big fool of myself and pray that I\u2019d measure up to what He expected of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ruth’s Return to the Catholic Faith<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Dec. of 1946, Ruth underwent surgery two years before his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His close friend, Paul Carey, said, \u201cThey\u2019re going to operate in the morning, Babe\u2026don\u2019t you think you ought to put your house in order?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth then explained that he \u201cdidn\u2019t dodge the long, challenging look in his eyes. I knew what he meant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the first time, I realized that death might strike me out. I nodded, and Paul got up, called in a Chaplain, and I made a full confession<\/strong>,” Ruth revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While visiting him, the chaplain said to Ruth, \u201cI\u2019ll return in the morning and give you Holy Communion\u2026but you don\u2019t have to fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth responded, \u201cI\u2019ll fast,\u201d adding that he \u201cdidn\u2019t have even a drop of water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then wrote, <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I lay in bed that evening, I thought to myself what a comforting feeling to be free from fear and worries. I now could simply turn them over to God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
